Third-party inspector, we take care of it

Rotterdam does not use a city electrical inspector. A third-party inspector from the approved list signs the job. We pull the permit. We call the inspector. You do not have to chase that.

National Grid still needs that approved inspection before they energize a new or upgraded service.

The City of Schenectady is a different path. City permit. City inspection. See our Schenectady panel upgrade page if you are inside the city line.

Why we still find fuse boxes on Rotterdam streets

A lot of Rotterdam two-stories and capes never left the original service. 60-amp and 100-amp are common. So are fuse boxes stuffed with the wrong size fuses.

If the cover says Federal Pacific, FPE, or Stab-Lok, we replace it. Those breakers have a long record of failing to trip. Adding a subpanel downstream of an FPE main is not a fix.

You can convert a fuse box without raising amperage if the drop, meter, and load calc support it. Most of the time the honest job is 200 amps.

Overhead masts, trees, and National Grid

Many Rotterdam houses still have an overhead drop and a mast. Trees in the yard change the job. So does a rusty mast that has to come off.

A 100-to-200 upgrade needs National Grid. They disconnect. We land the new socket and panel. We handle grounding and bonding. After a pass, they restore power and set or reseal the meter.

The 2025 Uniform Code put New York on the 2023 NEC. Rotterdam permits dated December 31, 2025 or later follow that book outside New York City. Outdoor emergency disconnects come with it. So does more GFCI.

What we replace in Rotterdam

  • Fuse box to a modern breaker panel
  • Federal Pacific, Stab-Lok, Pushmatic, and other known-problem gear
  • 100-amp overhead to 200-amp, with a new mast when needed
  • Storm-damaged weatherheads and service cable

Adding a Level 2 charger? See EV charger installation. We still run the load calc on the house.

Price moves with the service, not a canned number

We quote after we see the mast, the meter, and the panel room. Overhead versus underground changes the number. A pipe riser is not a mast job. Tight workspace and trees add time.

More on how we approach this work is on our electric panels page.

EmPower+ is income-based, not automatic

NY Clean Heat is a heat pump program. The rebate goes to the HVAC contractor, not the electrician, for a standalone panel.

If you own a one-family home and may be income-eligible, check EmPower+ Sustainable Futures. NYSERDA currently lists up to $5,000 for a panel and $2,500 for wiring on top of core caps. Confirm at nyserda.ny.gov/empower. Do not assume that stacks with other programs.
