More 150 and 200 amp already, not everywhere
Later Niskayuna streets often opened with 150 or 200 amps. The panel may still be the wrong brand. Or it is full. A same-amp swap can be the honest job if the load calc holds.
Older ranches still have a 100-amp overhead drop. Those houses trip when the dryer and the AC start together. That is a service upgrade, not a new breaker.
Fuse boxes are less common here than in Rotterdam or the city. Federal Pacific and Stab-Lok still appear. Those get replaced. No subpanel off an FPE main.
Heat pump plus charger: we run the calc
This is the Niskayuna question we hear most. Can the existing 150-amp or 200-amp panel take a heat pump and a Level 2 charger? Sometimes yes. Sometimes the main is already loaded and we need a larger 200-amp panel, or a service change.

Third-party inspection in Niskayuna
Niskayuna uses a third-party electrical inspector. We pull the permit. We handle the inspector. You do not pick a name off a list.

National Grid will not energize a new or upgraded service without the approved inspection.
When National Grid is on a Niskayuna job
Raising amperage from 100 to 200 needs the utility. They disconnect. We work dead. After inspection they restore power and set or reseal the meter.
A same-amp panel swap may not need a full upgrade application. The meter still comes out so we can work dead. Inspectors treat a panel replacement as a big change under the new code.
Niskayuna permits on or after December 31, 2025 follow the 2023 NEC. New York adopted it in the 2025 Uniform Code, outside New York City. Outdoor emergency disconnects on new services. More GFCI.
