Electrical Panel Upgrade in Colonie, NY

Town of Colonie work is suburban ranch work. It is not a City of Albany two-family. Third-party inspector. Wider lots. A lot of 100-amp overhead services that never got touched.

Latham and Loudonville are served from this page. Those URLs fold here. Same crew. Same permit path.

We are Choice Electric, 2767 Curry Road, Schenectady, NY 12303. Family-owned. Licensed and insured. IBEW Local 236. National Grid. 24-hour emergency. One-year parts and labor.

Colonie is not the City of Albany

If you are inside the City of Albany, the city issues the permit and the city inspects. Use our Albany panel upgrade page for that.

In the Town of Colonie we pull the town permit. A third-party electrical inspector from the approved list signs the job. We handle that inspector for you.

National Grid still will not energize an upgraded service without that approved inspection.

Latham and Loudonville, same page

Need a panel in Latham or Loudonville? This is the page. We are not sending you to a separate URL. The housing is the same mix of ranches, splits, and later additions.

Suburban ranches and the original 100-amp drop

A lot of Colonie ranches still have the original 100-amp overhead. The panel is full. The dryer and the AC already share a tight main. A heat pump or a Level 2 charger pushes it over.

Fuse boxes are less common than in the city, but they are not gone. Federal Pacific and Stab-Lok still turn up in 1960s and 1970s houses. Those get replaced. A subpanel off an FPE main is not the job.

  • 100-amp overhead ranch to 200-amp
  • Full 150-amp panel swapped for a 200-amp main
  • Hazardous brand replacement, same amperage only if the load calc allows it
  • Outdoor emergency disconnects on new services

When we file with National Grid

Raising amperage means the utility is in the job. They disconnect. We work dead. After inspection they restore power and set or reseal the meter.

Same-amp panel swap: maybe not a full upgrade application. The meter still comes out so the gear is dead. Inspectors now treat a panel replacement as a big change under the new code.

Colonie permits on or after December 31, 2025 follow the 2023 NEC. That is the 2025 Uniform Code, outside New York City. Outdoor emergency disconnects apply on new services.

Chargers, heat pumps, then the quote

We run a load calculation before we promise 100 amps will hold. Charger work is covered on EV charger installation.

Price moves with overhead versus underground, mast versus pipe riser, workspace, and trees. We quote after we see the service. No canned Colonie number on this page.

See the electric panels hub for how we approach service work.

What NYSERDA may cover, and what it will not

NY Clean Heat does not pay the electrician for a standalone panel. That rebate sits with the HVAC contractor on a heat pump job.

EmPower+ Sustainable Futures is for income-eligible one-family homes. NYSERDA lists up to $5,000 for a panel and $2,500 for wiring on top of core caps. Confirm at nyserda.ny.gov/empower. Do not assume programs stack.
